I am just a guy who has been consuming porn daily on an increasingly harmful and compulsive basis for almost 20 years and has decided to get serious about quitting.

Regardless of whether my usage is classified as an ‘addiction’, I have grown extremely unhappy with my inability to stop watching it, the control it seems to have over me and the impact it has had on my friendships and relationships.

I use this blog to write about my experiences and feelings during what I hope will be a period of recovery, and who knows maybe it will provide some insight or help to others who have decided to get serious about quitting. I certainly believe that there is not enough information out there about porn addiction, so I feel obligated to help spread the word about what I have no doubt is one of those most increasingly common yet unspoken-about addictions.

  1. Wishing you the best Brian, I worked in the sex industry (years ago) and started feeling while I was in it, we were contributing to people relating to a fantasy somewhat. I commend you for taking hold of your own care. Real human interaction is always better. All the best.

I have been battling this since I was a child. I was exposed to pornography at the age of 10. My home life was less than ideal and was a perfect laboratory and breeding ground for this addiction to take hold of me.
    I have been sober now for almost 10 months and this is my longest time sober in over 12 years.
    I do believe that definitions are one of the keys to understanding and as the world understands addiction so I too understand it. The psychologists say that, “Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health. Users may not be aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others ”

    1. I guess that depends on the type of compulsive behaviour that is defining the addiction. Each person’s addiction has its differences and therefore each person’s definition of a slip will be different. Ultimately is up to the individual addict to define for themselves exactly the behaviours that they need to stop.

      For me, my addiction is compulsively watching, and masturbating to, online pornography. However, I know that if I spent hours watching porn but not masturbating, I am still feeding the same addiction, getting the same hit (if not more of a hit because I am withholding from climax). So for me, I have defined that watching porn at all is a slip. It has helped me to define this really clearly so that I can’t try and tell myself I haven’t slipped when I really know that I have. (If you are interested, look up the circles of addiction – outer, middle and inner – this is the technique I used).

      Finally, I’d say that the addict probably knows, deep down and if they ask themselves honestly, whether what they’ve done is a slip or not. Usually, if I’m asking myself if what I’ve just done is considered a slip, it is because I know deep down that it is but I don’t want to admit to myself that I have slipped.

      1. i think for me masturbation is more of an addiction. i used to masturbate even without porn. i train my brain to look at nudity without masturbation. i have been masturbation free since july30th.
